- Academic background -
Arlindo Silva is an Associate Professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design since 2015. Until 2015, he was a tenured Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon, Portugal, in the Mechanical Engineering Department. He received his Licenciatura in 1991 in Mechanical Engineering, his MSc in 1995 and PhD in 2001, both in Composite Materials at IST. He developed his research activities within the Institute of Science and Engineering of Materials and Surfaces (ICEMS) until 2013, in the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IDMEC) between 2013 and 2015, and currently develops his research at the International Design Center (IDC) in Singapore.
- Publishing and Research -
Co-author of three books (in Portuguese) on topics related to Mechanical Engineering and Manual Wheelchairs for the Impaired. Co-editor of two books on Product Development, from IGI-Global, and on Technology Evaluation and Selection, from Springer. Published over a hundred technical papers in refereed journals, conference proceedings, book chapters and technical reports in the areas of rehabilitation of the impaired, composite materials, design ideation, product development and materials selection, also serving as reviewer for sixteen international journals, the European Union Research Council, the Austrian Research Promotion Agency, and the Portuguese Innovation Agency. He has supervised 21 MSc theses and 8 PhD theses in various scientific domains. He is currently supervising 3 PhD students. He is co-lead for the Experimental Design thrust at the International Design Center.
- Teaching -
Holds sixty patents, filed with his students on products developed in the courses taught at IST. Most recently, he has been involved in teaching Technical Drafting, Mechanical Design, Product Design and Development and Engineering Materials at IST, and Introduction to Design at SUTD. He has taught in other higher education institutions in Portugal, namely the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal, the Polytechnic Institute of Cavado, the University of Azores, the University of Minho and the University of Porto. He was also involved in the MIT-Portugal Program through the Engineering Design and Advanced Manufacturing focus area, in the courses on Product Design and Development, and Technology Evaluation and Selection, interacting strongly with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
- Other professional activities -
He has served as a court-appointed expert in Mechanical Engineering related matters and as a jury in several design and innovation contests. He is a member of the Portuguese Accreditation Board for Higher Education. He is also a member of the Product Development and Management Association, the Design Society, the American Society of Engineering Education and the Portuguese Society for Engineering Education. He was Senior Materials Education Consultant for Engineering and Design at Granta Design Ltd, UK, from January 2012 to January 2013.

He is the recipient of the MIT-Portugal Education Innovation Award 2009. He has been a Professor of Excellence at IST in 2011, 2013 and 2014.
