Born in Água d’Alto, São Miguel, Açores (1946), PhD in Biological Sciences (1985), University of Rhode Island (USA), full professor at the University of the Azores since 1995. Specialized in Systematics of Ellobiidae and Evolution of Azorian terrestrial Gastropoda, and also interested in biodiversity and conservation in the Azores. PI of the research group CIBIO-Pólo Açores. Organized the World Congress of Malacology (2013), international workshops for malacological research as well as congresses dealing with science and Azorian natural legacy conservation. President of Unitas Malacologica – World Association of Malacology from 2010-2013, is now member of Unitas Council as Past-President. President of Sociedade Afonso Chaves (scientific and cultural society) and editor of its bulletin ‘Açoreana’. Co-author of ‘Coastal Ecology of the Açores’, author of ‘Islands of Blue and Green’ and ‘The Princess’ Ring’, as well as the TV documentaries ‘Misty Islands’ and ‘A day and a night on the Submarine Banks’.
