Dr Tom J. de Koning (http://www.rug.nl/research/genetics/staff/tom-j-de-koning) was trained as a paediatrician and specialized in disorders arising from inborn errors of metabolism. He did rotations in genetics at the University of California, San Francisco, CA, USA and the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, ON, Canada, and was a research fellow in child neurology at the Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, UK. In the Netherlands, he was Head of the Department of Metabolic Diseases at the University Medical Centre Utrecht, before moving to Groningen in 2012. Here, he works at the interface between neurology, genetics and inborn errors, particularly relating to movement disorders in children. He is a co-leader of Abnormal Neurological Development, early Diagnosis and Intervention (ANDDI), one of the institutional research programs of the University of Groningen and University Medical Center Groningen.
In addition to his clinical and academic work he is currently finishing an MBA to further improve his management and leadership skills.
