Biography

MOLECULAR AND TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE - Metabolism, Insulin Resistance and Complications Our group is interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms of: 1) insulin resistance in tissues particularly the adipocyte and 2) wound healing in diabetes. We are primarily evaluating alterations in insulin action and intracellular signaling in post-transplant diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and inflammation by understanding the role and the impact of the adipocyte as an endocrine organ. In addition, we are investigating the importance of both neuropeptides and insulin in skin wound healing in diabetes. Ongoing Projects: 1. Evaluate wound healing progress, cytokine expression, angiogenesis and inflammatory signaling after topical skin treatments with peptides. 2. Elucidate the cross-talk dynamics between epicardial fat and the heart muscle – evaluation of glucose and lipid metabolism, inflammation and cellular “fitness” levels. 3. Unravel the impact of glucocorticoids and immunosuppressive agents in the impairment of glucose and lipid metabolism, as well as oxydative phosphorylation in vivo.
