Professor David Roder Chair of Cancer Epidemiology & Population Health at the Centre for Population Health Research, University South Australia, Senior Principal Research Fellow at the South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute & also employed under contract by Cancer Australia, the NSW Cancer Institute, & Cancer Council South Australia (SA). He has been a WHO consultant in Mongolia, Malaysia & Indonesia, & has worked under contract to the Malaysian, South Australian & New Zealand Government. He presently Chairs the National Cervical Cancer Quality Safety Monitoring Committee, the Cancer Australia Variation in Breast Cancer Steering Committee, the Australian Prostate Clinical Cancer Registry Steering Committee, the National Prostate Cancer Health Outcomes Research Unit, & is a member of a range of NHMRC, Cancer Australia, & APOCP committees. He has adjunct professorial status at Flinders University & Monash University.
While remaining active in research, with approximately 235 peer-reviewed research publications, as a researcher & research reviewer for numerous international journals & research funding bodies & has reviewed research units in SA, WA, NSW, Qld, Victoria, Tasmania & nationally. His profile for the period since 2010 includes: citations 1610, h-index 17, & i10-index 52. He has commonly served on research grant panels of the NHMRC & NZ Medical Research Council. He has been an invited presenter of scientific papers and/or chaired sessions at international scientific meetings in Australia, NZ, the UK, USA, Africa, NZ, Mongolia, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia & Indonesia. He is Regional Deputy Editor of the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention. While remaining active as a researcher, his main focus is now on research translation, including literature distillations, development of scientific position statements, & negotiations with policy makers at national & jurisdictional level, & less so, at an international level.
His research interests are broad, but with a focus on cancer, health-services evaluation, safety & quality monitoring, & data-infrastructure development, & with an additional emphasis on data linkage. As Chair of the NHMRC Principal Committee on Prevention & Community Health, Deputy Chair of the SA Government HREC, & member of the Population Health Research Network of Australia’s Privacy Committee, he has been active in optimising data use through data linkage within legal & ethical constraints. He led a jointly funded SA Health & Cancer Council SA $4.4M initiative to redevelop cancer data infrastructure in South Australia & was responsible for driving & supporting early development of the SA Cancer Research Collaborative (cumulative funding from SA Health & Cancer Council SA of $24.4M for both initiatives). At a jurisdiction level in SA, he has been Chair of the SAHMRI Population Health Pillar Committee, the Data Redevelopment Committee of the South Australian Cancer Clinical Network, Deputy Chair of the Human Research Ethics Committee of SA Health, member of the State Accreditation Committee of BreastScreen, member of the Board of the Cervical Cytology Registry & member of the Steering Committee of SA NT DataLink. He commonly serves as PhD examiner, including on 3 occasions in 2013/2014, & as external reviewer for applications for promotion to professorial status or extensions of professorial status (including recently in Australia, NZ, the United Kingdom & Canada).
He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2000 for contributions to cancer epidemiology, cancer registration & research. He has administered cancer registries for about 25 years & been Oceania representative on the Board of the International Association of Cancer Registries. He is an Honorary Life Member of the International Association of Cancer Registries.
He supervised 3 PhD students in 2011+ from UniSA, The University of Adelaide, & Flinders University & post-doctoral research fellows from Germany & Finland. He has also supervised in-house training at Cancer Council SA of medical students, honours, masters & PhD students, & of Mongolian & Malaysian medical epidemiologists in cancer epidemiology.
He is a member of the Cancer Monitoring Advisory Committee of the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare & was previously a member of Governance structures of the Breast Cancer Audit of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He was previously a member of the NHMRC Research Committee & the NHMRC Fellowship Committee & continues to be Chair of the Prevention & Community Health Committee of the NHMRC. Until recently he was a member of the Commonwealth’s Medical Services Advisory Committee & presently is Chair the Cervical Screening Program Quality Safety Monitoring Committee & member of the cervical screening “renewal implementation committee. He was a member of the National Quality & Management Committee of BreastScreen Australia from 1995 to January 2015.
