My doctoral studies in Chemical Engineering were funded by a 4-year Spanish FPI (Formation of Investigator Personal) fellowship, and in 2008 I was awarded the PhD with a Cum Laude distinction, receiving the Best Thesis Award of University of Vigo for 2007-2008. This followed upon a broad-based basic scientific education received at the University of Vigo, Spain. I received a degree in Chemistry, with a specialization in Industrial Chemistry, 2003, as well as a Bachelor degree Thesis and an MSc in Chemical Science in 2003 and 2005, respectively. In the same institution, I obtained an MSc in Food Science and Technology during the same year as my PhD (2008).
Since my doctorate, I have pursed my investigation in the Ionic Liquid field at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal. However, my collaboration with the University of Vigo is on-going and I have received invitations to lecture in some courses there. As a Post-Doc, I have won 5 national grants and a international one - a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship. Currently, I hold an assistant researcher position (FCT Investigator-2014) in the same group at the LAQV, REQUIMTE, FCT/UNL where I hope to continue my investigation.
Despite the fact that only 8 years have passed since my PhD, I have already published 62 papers in international peer review journals with an accumulated impact factor (IF) of 199 (47 papers are ranked in the top 25% highest IF (Q1) of the corresponding areas, 23 in the first 12.5% and 4 in the first 6%). Other two papers have been submitted and are awaiting reviewer comments. I have accumulated more than 2010 citations and an h-index of 27. One paper (Chem. Commun. 48 (2012) 3656-3658) was awarded as the second Best Ionic Liquids Articles from RSC in 2012 and another article (J. Chem. Thermodyn. 46 (2012) 2-28) was also rewarded as Hot Paper in 2014 and as Highly Cited Paper during 2014-2016 from Essential Science Indicators. I have been first author in 40 of 62 papers, 27 of which authored independently from my PhD supervisor and 17 as corresponding author (independent investigator since 2010). 43 out of 62 publications have come following my PhD. My papers include some in high IF journals in the areas of: Green & Sustainable Science & Technology (6 Green Chem.), Multidisciplinary Chemistry (1 Chem. Commun.), Chemical Engineering (1 Chem. Eng. J., 1 ACS Sustainable Chem. Eng. and 1 Sep. Purif. Technol.), Multidisciplinary Materials Science (1 J. Phys. Chem. C and 2 Langmuir) and Physics, Atomic, Molecular & Chemical (2 Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys.).
I have also participated in 15 R&D projects funded by public and private institutions (1 industrial, 2 international (1 as PI), 4 Spanish, and 8 Portuguese (2 as PI)). I am currently the principal investigator in one FCT project. Other academic contributions include 3 book chapters, 55 papers in conference proceedings, 9 invited oral communications and 114 communications in conferences (27 oral and 87 posters). Moreover, I have also registered one Spanish patent. I also participated in the Spanish Ionic Liquid Network and I am a member of a COST Action: Exchange on Ionic Liquids. I have also collaborations with France, Colombia, UK and Spain. I completed the supervision of 10 master's students as well as 13 scholars in specific research projects. One Post-Doc student, five PhD students, two master's student and four initiation researchers are currently under my supervision.
Frequent peer invitations attest to the recognition of my work. I have been proposed as invited professor (2014) in Université de Pau, France; I have participated on the jury of 6 PhD's Thesis and 5 Master's Thesis, have refereed papers in 31 high impact factor journals, have evaluated an international Chemical Technology projects, have been invited to lecture in PhD Programs (University of Aveiro, Porto and ITQB) and I have prepared and coordinated numerous training courses.
