Biography
I studied Biology at the University of Oviedo (2001-2006) and soon started researching as an intern student, becoming interested in mycorrhizae and fungi. I obtained a M.Sc. degree in Ecosystem Restoration (2006-2008), a pioneer master imparted by the University of Alcalá, Complutense University of Madrid, Polytechnic University of Madrid, and King Juan Carlos University. I obtained my Ph.D from the University of Alcalá (2006-2011) after researching at the Dept. of Plant Biology (Botany area) under the supervision of Dr. José Luis García Manjón.
In the last years of my Ph.D stage I started collaborating with mycologists from multiple countries of Southern Europe, both academics and citizen scientists. This motivated me to create ALVALAB (http://www.alvalab.es) in 2012, a private laboratory where I provide different services (DNA processing, PCR-sequencing, phylogenetic analyses, scientific support) to scientists working on biodiversity worldwide. I have worked for multiple Public Research Bodies (PRBs), such as Universities, Research Institutes, Botanical Gardens, Natural Parks, as well as for the private sector, being hired by enterprises, associations, and individual citizen scientists from all over the world. Since 2018, my lab is located at the business incubator of the Severo Ochoa building of the University of Oviedo, after signing a collaboration agreement with this institution.
