Giuseppe Saccomandi is born in San Benedetto del Tronto (Italy) in 1964 and he has spent a long period of his youth in Bruxelles where he has attended the Schola Europea Bruxellensis in Uccle. Now is full Professor of Mathematical Physics and Head of the Dipartimento di Ingegneria of the University of Perugia. Moreover he is adjunct Professor of Applied Mathematics at NUI Galway. He has held visiting appointments at University Paris VI (1991), University of Virginia (1999, 2001), CNRS in Paris (2005 SSHN fellowship, 2006 bourse del la ville de Paris) and University of Aix-Marseille (2012 and 2014 Carnot star fellowship). His research interests are in Rational Mechanics (mechanics of continua and nonlinear elasticity) and applied mathematics (molecular biology and biomechanics first).
He is the co-author of a textbook in rational mechanics for engineering students. Saccomandi is director of the Gruppo Nazionale di Fisica Matematica of Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica and is the president of the International Society for the Interaction of Mechanics and Mathematics (ISIMM). He also coordinated three courses at the International Center for Mechanical Sciences (CISM) of Udine and three mini-workshops at Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach. He is contributing editor for the International Journal of Nonlinear Mechanics and in the editorial boards of Int. J. of Engineering Science, Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, Ricerche di Matematica, Frontiers Materials. He has served as guest editor for for Biomechanics and Modeling in Mechanobiology, IMA J. of Applied Math and Acta Applicandae Mathematica.
