He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, mostly on topics in tobacco control. He is an active member of the International Tobacco Control (ITC) project, a longitudinal cohort study conducted in 28 countries around the world. He is currently a chief investigator on the Australian arm of the ITC-4 country project, an NHMRC-funded study (2016-2020) with the aim to understand the role of vaporized nicotine products such as e-cigarettes in helping people to transition in and out of smoking and how this might be affected by regulatory environment for e-cigarettes in different countries. Hua’s major research interests include understanding the public health benefits and risks of alternative nicotine delivery products including e-cigarettes, the determinants of smoking cessation and relapse, how post-quitting experiences change over time and whether they predict smoking relapse, the role of normative beliefs about smoking on quitting activity, and the role of cultural factors like religion in motivating smokers to quit.
