Biography
Dr Mena Farag
BSc (Hons), MBBS, MRCP (UK), PGCert (Dist)
Clinical Research Fellow (PhD candidate)
Specialist Registrar in Neurology (ST6)
I am a Clinical Research Fellow and PhD candidate at the Huntington’s Disease Centre, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. My research focuses on the longitudinal analysis of fluid biomarkers and their correlations with grey and white matter volumes in young adult Huntington’s disease gene expansion carriers. This work is contributing to advancing our understanding of early pathological changes in Huntington’s disease with potential implications for future therapeutic interventions. My PhD supervisors are Professor Sarah Tabrizi, Dr Rachael Scahill, and Professor Ed Wild.
I completed my medical training (MBBS) at St George’s, University of London, and achieved First Class Honours in my intercalated BSc in Neuroscience at King’s College London. During my undergraduate studies, I conducted wet lab research at the MRC Centre for Developmental Neurobiology, where my dissertation investigated the effects of Odd-skipped (Odd) loss-of-function on neuronal specification in Drosophila melanogaster.
After graduating from medical school, I completed my Academic Foundation Programme (AFP) and Core Medical Training (CMT) in the North West Thames deanery, before obtaining my National Training Number (NTN) in Neurology in South London in 2019. I completed Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK (MRCP(UK)) in 2018 and passed the Specialty Certificate in Neurology (SCE) in 2022. I am currently on an Out-of-Programme Research (OOP R) period to undertake my PhD, after completing ST5 in Neurology. My clinical and academic interests lie in neurodegenerative diseases, translational neuroscience, and the integration of biomarker research into clinical practice and therapeutics.
