Dr. Charmandari graduated from the Medical School of the University of Thessaloniki as a valedictorian of her class (highest distinction) in 1988, and completed her specialization in Pediatrics in the UK. She was further subspecialized in Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology at the London Centre for Paediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, and University College Hospital in London (UK). Dr. Charmandari is a certified Pediatrician and Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinologist by the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, London, UK. She obtained a Master of Science in Clinical Pediatrics and a PhD in Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology, which were awarded by the University of London (UK) in 1998 and 2001, respectively. She subsequently undertook a Postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular Endocrinology and Cellular Biology at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, USA. She also worked as a Consultant in Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology at St. James' University Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds, UK (2006-2007).
Following 15 years of clinical and research (basic, clinical and translational) work in the UK and USA, Dr. Charmandari returned back to Greece in 2007 having been awarded a European Union reintegration grant. She used this opportunity to establish and develop the Laboratory of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens.
In February 2011, Dr. Charmandari joined the faculty of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as an Associate Professor, and became Full Professor of Pediatric and Adolescent Endocrinology in 2015. She carries out her clinical and research work at the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, First Department of Pediatrics, "Aghia Sophia" Hospital for Children.
Dr. Charmandari is a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP), since 1996, and holds the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in General Paediatrics as well as Paediatric Endocrinology (CCST) since 2005. She is an Affiliated Investigator of the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens as well as a member of the British Society for Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, the Society for Endocrinology, The Endocrine Society, and the Medical Association of Athens. Since 2014, she is a member of the Sectorial Scientific Council in Biomedical Sciences of the National Council for Research and Technology. In 2007 she was awarded the "Henning Andersen Prize" of the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology for her research.
