Biography

I am a neonatologist and developmental immunologist. As a clinician, I am regularly involved in the medical care of infants needing intensive medical care at BC Women's Hospital. Newborns are particularly vulnerable to infections. Infection and prematurity are leading causes of mortality and long-term health problems. As a researcher, my lab focuses on understanding the development of the immune system in humans before and at birth, why some individuals are more susceptible to infections, and how to prevent diseases in this age group. The basis of my research is to use immunology to study newborn populations, combining epidemiology, and lab-based human immunology and molecular biology, as well as clinical trials/interventional studies in neonatal care.
