Sandra Maria Rodrigues Balão holds a Master and a PhD Degree from the Higher Institute for
Social and Political Sciences (School of Social and Political Sciences), University of Lisbon (ISCSP-ULisboa).
Her main areas of interest are: Globalization and Military Strategic Studies; The International
System and its [New] Public and Private, Single or Collective Actors; Multilevel Power Politics;
Foreign Policy; Geopolitics; Global Studies; Elite Theory; Governance and Democracy and State
Studies. She has been focusing her Area Study interests in the Arctic (security challenges in a broad sense) with a focus in the EU strategy for the Arctic Region, as well as in the USA & NATO Areas.
She teaches both undergraduate and graduate Political Science, Strategic and International
Relations Studies’ Courses. She is an integrated researcher in CAPP (Center for Administration and Public Policies), where she is coordinating the stream of Politics and Government issues and a cooperative researcher in IO (Eastern Issues Institute). Both research centers are recognized and assessed by the Portuguese Scientific Foundation with “Excelent” and “Very Good” marks, respectively.
She has completed the Portuguese National Defense Course (CDN2010) from the
Portuguese National Defense Institute (National Defense Ministry), the second edition of the
Civilian Crisis Management Course from the Portuguese National Defense Institute (National
Defense Ministry) , the Security and Defense Regional Dynamics Course from the
Portuguese National Defense Institute (National Defense Ministry)  and the Intelligence and Democracy Course from the Portuguese National Defense Institute (National Defense Ministry) , also.
She has presented some papers in International Conferences as those organized by ECPR, IPSA
and ISA and is a peer reviewer of scientific journals such as IPSR, Empedocles, Proelium, Nação e Defesa, Geopolítica, Revista Portuguesa de Ciência Política, among others. Some of her scientific research outputs are published.
