Marcelo Correia (MC) is a postdoctoral researcher at i3S/IPATIMUP interested in mitochondrial biology and metabolism of aging syndromes. Particularly, his studies focus on the impact of different mutations in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) or metabolic dysfunction for the development of age-related diseases, through the impact in metabolism and epigenetics.
MC graduated in Biomedicine and Experimental Biology (PDBEB) at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) from University of Coimbra in 2016. Supervised by Prof João Ramalho-Santos, MC studied 1) the impact of the natural antioxidant compound kaempferol and 2) the importance of Sirtuins in embryonic stem cells and their metabolism. Previous, he got a degree in Biology (2009) from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (UP) and a Master degree in Molecular and Cell Biology (2005) from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra (2011).
