Biography

My research is focused on the photosynthesis studies whose results can find biotechnological applications for human health and environmental safety. In this context, the main purposes of my research are: i) screening of different Chlamydomonas reinhardtii strains and external stimuli capable to accumulate constitutive and/or induced high levels of carotenoids and plastoquinones compounds, whose healthy activity has been already recognised; ii) study of algal mutants for biosensoristic purposes in the protection and environmental monitoring. In particular, the study is finalised to deeply characterize photosynthetic efficiency and capacity of C. reinhardtii strains, mutated in the Photosystem II D1 protein and impaired in the biosynthetic pathway of carotenoids, hence in non photochemical quenching mechanism. My work includes analyzing and understanding of biological process in C. reinhardtii strains, obtained by: expression analyses of biosynthetic carotenogenesis genes, chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthetic oxygen evolution, High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Real-Time RT PCR techniques.
