Francisco Dias held a PhD degree in Tourism Sciences from the University of Perpignan (France). Before, he held a master degree in Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology, at Moscow State University – Lomonossov (Russia), and another master degree in Social Psychology, at University of Porto (Portugal).
He is associate professor in the School of Tourism and Maritime Technology (ESTM) at the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPL). From 2010 to 2013, he was the director of GITUR - Research Group Unit of the IPL. He was the founder and editor-in-chief of the European Journal of Tourism, Hospitality and Recreation (EJTHR) until 2015, and now he is Deputy/Managing Editor of this journal. He is the Vice-President of the EATSA – Euro-Asia Tourism Studies Association and also member of Direction Board of the International Association of Branding (Observatório de Marcas).
His empirical studies are mainly cover a large range of psychological and sociological aspects of tourism - imaginary, social representations, destination branding, tourist motivation and consumer behavior - and also the development of indicators and data gathering methodologies for monitoring tourism destinations.
Currently, he is the coordinator of the NID - Research Group on Tourism Destination Management, and he is the principal investigador of two research projects:
- The Favourite Destinations project that consists in the creation of a Global Destinations Management Index, on the basis of a worldwide multilingual survey that is being implemented by a tourism research network with representatives from more than 40 countries.
- The Tourism Observatory of Turismo do Centro de Portugal.
Aside that, he continues to be the general director of the International Tourism Film Festival ART&TUR (that takes place annually in Vila Nova de Gaia), that is the Portuguese member of the CIFFT (Internation Committee of Tourism Film Festivals).
