William Van Gordon is a lecturer in psychology at the University of Derby. He was a Buddhist monk for approximately ten years and is co-founder of the Awake to Wisdom Centre for Meditation, Mindfulness, and Psychological Wellbeing. William's research focusses on evaluating the applications of mindfulness and other contemplative approaches for improving psychosocial functioning. He sits on the editorial board for various academic journals including Mindfulness and Mindfulness and Compassion. William has over 100 academic publications relating to the scientific study of mindfulness and meditation. He is co-author of a book called ‘The Mindful Warrior: The Path to Wellbeing, Wisdom and Awareness’ and co-editor of academic volumes on ‘The Buddhist Foundations of Mindfulness’ and ‘Buddhist-derived Approaches in Mental Health and Addiction’. William employs a variety of research methods including randomised controlled trials, long-term prospective studies, and clinical case studies. In addition to quantitative research designs, most of William’s intervention evaluation studies feature a strong qualitative component (e.g. using techniques such as Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis or Grounded Theory).
