Biography

Dr. Joan Josep Roa graduated in Chemical Engineering at Universitat Rovira i Virgili of Tarragona in 2005 and also graduated in Material Engineering at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya of Barcelona in 2007 and got his Ph.D. at Universitat de Barcelona in 2010. Before joining CIEFMA research group at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in 2012, he was a tenured researcher at CNRS at the University of Poitiers (Poitiers, France). During the thesis period (2006-2010) in the Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering Department at the University of Barcelona (Barcelona), attention was focussed on the investigation of the mechanical properties at micro- and nanometric scale by instrumented indentation technique of advance ceramic materials (mainly superconductor materials and also materials used as anode, cathode and/or electrolyes in solid oxide fuel cells devices). Moreover, during the Phd thesis, relevant results have been reported in several national and international meetings and conferences and published on international peer-review journals. Moreover, during the PhD period at the University of Barcelona, 2 book chapters and 1 book were published. In 2009, the researcher did a 3-month stage at the Institut Pprime (Département de Physique et Mécanique des Matériaux, French National Centre for Scientific Research in Poitiers, France) under the supervision of Dr. Christophe TROMAS. During that period, the young researcher was involved in the determination of plastic deformation mechanisms in YBCO superconductor material by nanoindentation and Atomic Force Microscopy. During this period (2006-2010), the researcher was co-author of a total of 10 publications published in indexed international journals (8 of them in journal ranked in the top 25% of their discipline), as well as, 2 chapters of books, and 14 proceedings. He also participated in more than 48 national and international conferences (22 oral presentations, 1 invited presentation, 3 seminaries and 22 poster presentations). During that time, he participated in 1 research project and 3 research contracts with companies. As a Post-doctoral fellow (2010-2012) in the “Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique” at the University of Poitiers (France), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ludovic Thilly, Dr. Christophe Tromas and Dr. Anne Joulain, attention was initially (first year) focussed in the investigation of the first stages of plasticity of complex materials (MAX phases). In doing so, the nanoindentation technique was used coupled with atomic force and electron backscattered diffraction techniques. Moreover, during the last semester some experiments were performed in the Paul Scherrer Institut (Switzerland) in order to study the plastic deformation mechanisms in MAX phases by in-situ deformation under neutrons or x-ray micro-beam. Finally, during 2012 (second year), the young researcher was involved in a research contract with BOSCH TRANSMISSION Technology (Tilburg, Netherland). During this period, work may be described in terms of Nanoindentation measurements on Nitrided Maraging Steel with different grades, in order to extract the nitriding kinetics. After the first post-doctoral stage, the researcher obtained a fellowship at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering at the Technical University of Catalonia (2012-present) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. M. Anglada and Prof. Dr. L.Llanes. During this year, attention was focussed in the investigation of the main deformation mechanisms in the following systems: i) austenitic-martensitic transformation in Transformation Induced Plasticity steels, ii) the relation deformation mechanisms and fracture events in twinning induce plasticity steels, and iii) phase transformation from cubic to hexagonal model alloys (cobalt-base). Furthermore, during this year, the researcher improved his skills in different surface and subsurface characterization techniques, as Focused Ion Beam, Electron Backscattered Diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy, etc. During the post-doctoral period (2010-currently), the researcher has been co-author of a total of total of 28 publications published in indexed international journals, as well as, 3 reviews, 1 book, 3 chapters of books, and 15 proceedings. During this time, the researcher has participated in 5 research projects and 2 research contract with a company. Furthermore, he has acted as an editor of 1 book entitled: “Materials for Ceramic Materials: Materials Science and Technologies”. Moreover, the researcher participated in more than 70 national and international conferences.
