Prof. Claudio Santi was born in Fabriano (AN) in 1967. In 1992 he graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Perugia discussing a MD-thesis in Organic Synthesis. He was awarded his PhD in 1996 under the supervision of Prof. Marcello Tiecco and in 1998 he received a fellow of the Swiss National Foundation to spend a period as visiting Scientist in the “Institute fur Organische Chemie” of Basel University. He has been invited as visiting professor in Jagiellonian University in Krakow (1997) School of Chemistry Cardiff University (1999) Jan Dlugosz University of Czestochowa (2013) and Universidad Federal de Pelotas (2014). In 2002 he becomes assistant professor and in 2005 aggregate professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Perugia. Since october 2013 he is associated professor of Organic Chemistry at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Perugia and the 11/12/2013 he received the National Scientific Habilitation as Full Professor.
Scientific interests and production:
Prof. Santi is a worldwide-recognized expert in organoselenium chemistry. He has pioneered the studies on the use of optically pure diselenides in asymmetric synthesis and it was the first to envision the possibility to use organoselenium reagents (with particular emphasis on catalysts) in Green Chemistry. He deeply studied the role of selenium heteroatom interactions as relevant conditions for the transfer of chiral information and more recently the reactivity of organoselenium derivatives in water. On this field, he produced the first class of bench stable zinc selenates that some authors named after him “Santi’s Reagents” and developed new eco-friendly protocols for the oxidation of organic substrates following a Glutathione Peroxidases-inspired approach. More recently he developed the synthesis of new nitrogen containing diselenides and Ebselen like derivatives evaluating their biological activity as GPx-like and/or as hinibitor of Ncp7 in the treatment of HIV e) and studied the targeting of GSH proposing for some selenium compounds a role of GSTP signaling modulators.
Beside selenium chemistry, Prof. Santi is scientifically involved in some project for the structural elucidation of biopolymers ad complex chemical structures using NMR spectroscopy.
Prof. Santi has published 90 peer-reviewed journal articles, 1 book, 7 book chapters and 5 review articles. His work has been cited ~ 1564 times as of May 2015 (ISI Web of Science). He has an h-index of 24 (ISI Web of Science) and an hc index of 13. A large number of his papers involve national and international collaborators.
Currently he is head of the international Network of research on Seleniun Sulfur and redox Catalysis.
