Urbano J. Nunes is a Full Professor with the Coimbra University and Senior researcher of the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR-UC). He is the coordinator of the ISR-UC Human-Centered Mobile Robotics Lab. He has been responsible for several funded projects at both national and international levels in the areas of mobile robotics and intelligent vehicles. He has research interests in several areas in connection with human-centered mobile robotics with axes on mobile service robotics, mobile assistive robotics, technologies for autonomous vehicles (navigation and perception), pattern recognition and machine learning. He is author/coauthor of more than 160 publications on international scientific journals, book chapters, and refereed conference proceedings. He was the supervisor of 13 Ph.D. students (concluded) and is the supervisor of 4 Ph.D. students. He was the coordinator of the master integrated course (bachelor plus master) on Electrical and Computer Engineering (2014-2017).
Prof. U.J. Nunes is a Member of the IROS Advisory Committee (2013-), was Vice President for Technical Activities of the IEEE ITS Society (2011-2012), a member of the Board of Governors of ITS Society (2009-2011), and a Cochair of the Technical Committee on Autonomous Ground Vehicles and ITS (2006-2011) of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS). He serves as Associate Editor the IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Vehicles (2015-), and was an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems (2007-2016) and IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine (2009-2017). He was co-organizer of eight journal special issues in topics related to Technologies for Intelligent Vehicles. He was with several international conferences: General co-chair of the 11th Int. Conf on Advanced Robotics (ICAR2003); Program Chair of IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conf. (ITSC2006); Program co-chair of the IEEE ITSC2008; Program Chair of the IEEE Int. Conf. on Vehicular Electronics and Safety (ICVES2007); General Chair of the 13th IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conf. (ITSC2010); a General Chair for the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2012), and the General Chair of the IEEE ROMAN2017.
Prof. Nunes was awarded: the IEEE ITS Society Outstanding Service Award in 2006; the IEEE RAS Society Most Active TC Award in 2006 as Co-Chair of RAS TC on ITS; as co-author, awarded as a winner of NiSIS Competition 2007 "Problem Task: analysis and Classification of the DaimlerChrysler Automotive Dataset Images".
