Jane Ball (PhD, RN) has 25 years’ experience of nursing workforce research and policy.
In 1999 she first worked with Prof Linda Aiken to explore associations between nurse staffing and patient outcomes. Between 2000 and 2009 she led the national nursing employment surveys, funded by the RCN. She is co-author of the WHO’s guide to skill-mix methodologies, and as RCN Policy Adviser (2009-2011), she authored the ‘Guidance on safe nurse staffing levels’ (Dec 2010).
As Deputy Director of the National Nursing Research Unit (KCL) she continued to research nurse staffing and patient outcomes, through RN4Cast, and a study of primary care. Now at University of Southampton, she is working with the Wessex CLAHRC on a programme of work to examine nursing workforce and the delivery of fundamental care in hospitals.
