Edmund W. Cheng (PhD, LSE) is an assistant professor at the Department of Government and International Studies and a fellow of the Institute of Future Cities at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His research interests include political regimes, contentious politics, social change and local governance in China, Hong Kong and Malaysia. He has published in Political Studies, The China Quarterly, Social Movement Studies and Modern Asian Studies. He received the 2016 Gordon White Prize for the most original article published in The China Quarterly. He co-edited Sheyun Niandai (Chinese University Press, 2017) and The Umbrella Movement (Amsterdam University Press, 2018) and is leading the World Values Survey Wave 7 in Hong Kong. His research projects have been supported by the Research Grants Council, the Central Policy Unit and the Education Bureau in Hong Kong.
