I study microorganisms that live under extreme conditions, particularly specializing on cold environments, acidic conditions, and the deep biosphere. In my research, we use various techniques within systems biology to study the organisms' properties and how they adapt to and affect their environment. This knowledge is then used by industries, e.g. to remove polluting chemicals in the mining industry and to understand the effect of microorganisms on underground storage of nuclear waste.
My work covers both basic and applied research, and contributes to an increased understanding of the evolution and ecology of microorganisms.
