Professor of Physics of Advanced Materials Werner Blau is internationally well known for his original work in molecular and polymer engineering. Organic and particularly polymeric materials are essential building blocks of nearly all modern technologies. For over two decades, Prof. Blau’s research has addressed the fundamental issue of structure-property relationships and made significant contributions towards understanding and application these in several areas, especially in the optically active nanostructures and polymers, and in the Carbon Nanotube composite areas. His group has become initiators of and international leaders in a number of related research fields, most notably in the area of Information and Communications Technology hardware. Prof. Blau is a co-inventor on 14 of patents and 3 patent applications, most of which cover nanomaterial systems: • WO2005075663 - Nanostructure Material and Process for the Preparation thereof • EP0949199, US6576341, JP2000044216 - Composition including nanotubes and an organic compound • US App. No. 12/610,612 – 2009 – Biologically-synthesized Nanocomposites • EP 077361053 / JP 2009/ 506036 / US 12/226318 – Nanoadditive System Some of the Carbon Nanotube related IP has been licensed by TCD to Unidym Inc., Sunnyvale, CA, USA, http://www.unidym.com/, a world leading company in CNT technology. Prof. Blau has also established and manages successfully the Polymer Research Centre of Materials Ireland. Up to recently, this centre was a part of the Materials Ireland PAT and is largely a technology-transfer and contract research institute for the Irish plastics industry. It will continue to serve all sectors including the medical device, pharmaceutical, electronics, and food processing, packaging and traditional polymer processing sectors.
