I completed a degree in Physics at the Department of Electronics and Automatic Control of the University of the Basque Country (Spain) in 1996, followed by a PhD in Neural Computation at Liverpool John Moores University (UK) in 2000. Following a Ramón y Cajal research fellowship (2003-2008), I became Associate Professor at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, UPC BarcelonaTech, in Barcelona, Spain. I am currently the Computer Science Dept. representative for UPC Terrassa Campus. My research interests include, but are not limited to, pattern recognition, machine learning and data mining, as well as their application in biomedicine, bioinformatics, business, ecology, and e-learning, on which subjects I have published widely. I am currently member of the IEEE Systems, Man & Cybernetics Society Spanish Chapter and the Task Force on Medical Data Analysis in the IEEE-CIS Data Mining Technical Committee, as well as member of the CIBER-BBN and the ATICA research network.
