Biography
(PhD, 1986, University of Edinburgh). Emeritus Research Professor (Profesor de Investigación) of the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC). Founding Manager (Secretary, 1988) of the Institute of Advanced Social Studies, the institutional precursor of the ongoing Institute of Public Goods and Policies (IPP). within the CSIC Centre of Human and Social Sciences in Madrid.
Jean Monnet Senior Research Fellow, European University Institute (Florence) (1998-99); Visiting scholar at universities of Denver (1985), Edinburgh (1986-88), Colorado (1994-95), Rome-La Sapienza (2002-2004), and CNR-IRPPS (2012-13); Invited postgraduate professor at the Centre of Political and Constitutional Studies-Madrid (International University Menendez Pelayo) (2011-2022)
Two long-standing fields of research: (a) Public social policy and welfare state; and (b) Territorial politics (multi-level governance and Europeanisation). Both have been carried out from a comparative perspective.
As an invited speaker, he has given over a hundred of presentations and conferences around the world. He has been a member of the executive committees (Boards) of two Research Committees in the International Political Science Association (IPSA- RC14 and RC28). He was founding Director of the Spanish Social Policy Network (REPS-ESPAnet) and has organised over twenty scientific meetings – including the XII World Congress of Sociology in Madrid, attended by over 6,000 participants.
He has been the principal investigator in 25 research projects developed under Spanish and Europeans institutions programmes. He has been engaged as research member in teams of 42 projects and contracts which have raised a combined amount of over 4 million euros (1988-2022).
(Co) author and (co) editor of 33 books, and over 150 peer-reviewed articles and chapters in collective books.
In 2022, he was awarded the Spanish National Prize for Research (Law, Economy and Social Sciences).
