Biography

My primary research area is rock mechanics and rock engineering. In addition, I also have interest in the areas of geotechnical engineering and soil mechanics. My research is focused on innovative solutions for mining and civil engineering projects, including nuclear waste isolation. In particular, tunnelling / underground excavations and rock slope stability are key areas of study. My research lab is working to develop improvements applicable to site characterization, and analysis and design methods of rock engineering-related structures. We have well-equipped laboratory facilities and computational / numerical modelling resources focused on projects that integrate these capabilities for impactful research findings. Some specific areas of interest are:
- in situ stress determination and evaluation;
- buckling of quarry and open pit floors;
- Leeb testing correlation for UCS and joint wall compressive strength determination;
- tunnel ground support design and analysis;
- rock slope stability analysis, in particular accounting for scale and variability;
- fundamental behaviour of intact rock and large-scale rock masses;
- pore pressure and hydromechanical behaviour of rock and rock masses.
