Biography

Margarita Díaz-Andreu is an archaeologist interested in the prehistoric archaeology and art (mainly rock art) of Western Europe. She is also concerned with history of archaeology and the politics of identity in archaeology (heritage, nationalism and colonialism, ethnicity and gender). She has carried out fieldwork in Spain, Britain and France. She has successfully supervised eight PhD students through to completion who have worked on topics related to prehistoric art and archaeology, the history of archaeology, heritage and identity. She has written books and articles on the prehistory of the Iberian Peninsula and the United Kingdom and their prehistoric art. Her PhD (Complutense University of Madrid, 1990) was a study of the emergence of social complexity in Central Spain. It focused on the dynamics of long-term social change in settlement patterns, burial rituals, metallurgy and other types of material culture in the Cuenca region throughout the Bronze Age (c. 2250-1500 BC) (book published in 1994, book on metallurgy in 1998). Projects on prehistoric art have discussed issues of interpretation (acoustics, landscape, gender and religious beliefs) and recording techniques (mainly the application of new 2D and 3D imaging techniques for the recording of rock carvings and paintings). These have centred on case studies in Spain, Britain, France and Italy. Díaz-Andreu has also published widely on a second major area of research, identity and the history of archaeology, with books such as The Archaeology of Identity (2005), Nationalism and Archaeology (1996, 2001), Excavating Women. A History of Women in European Archaeology (1998), A World History of Archaeology in the Nineteenth Century: Nationalism, Colonialism and the Past (2007), and Archaeological encounters. Building networks of Spanish and British archaeologists in the 20th century (2012). She has also edited a volume on the prestigious archaeologist Gordon Childe (European Journal of Archaeology, 2009) and a dictionary of archaeologists working in Spain (15th-20th c, 2009). She is a Senior Editor for the second edition of the Oxford Companion to Archaeology (2012). Her research has focused on particular case studies in Spain and the United Kingdom, as well as wide-ranging overviews of gender, nationalism and imperialism. The Archaeology of Identity (2005), Nationalism and Archaeology (1996, 2001), Excavating Women. A history of Women in European Archaeology (1998), A World History of Nineteeenth-Century Archaeology. Nationalism, Colonialism and the Past (2007) , and Archaeological encounters. Building networks of Spanish and British archaeologists in the 20th century (2012).
