Biography

Honorary Consultant Physician and Clinical Pharmacologist, Centre for Evidence Based Medicine, Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford. Emeritus Fellow of Green-Templeton College, Oxford. President Emeritus and Vice-President Publications, British Pharmacological Society. Member of the Advisory Board of the British National Formulary. Chairman, British Pharmacopoeia Commission’s Expert Advisory Group on Nomenclature. Editor-in-Chief, Meyler’s Side Effects of Drugs—The International Encyclopedia of Adverse Drug Reactions and Interactions (16th edition, 2016) and of its annual update volumes (Side Effects of Drugs Annuals 15-35). Co-editor (with Paul Glasziou and Les Irwig), Evidence-Based Monitoring: From Principles to Practice (Wiley-Blackwell, 2008). Co-author, The Oxford Handbook of Practical Drug Therapy (Oxford University Press, 2nd edition, 2011). Co-editor (with John Talbot), Stephens’ Detection and Evaluation of Adverse Drug Reactions: Principles and Practice. 6th edition. (Wiley-Blackwell, 2011). Research interests: all aspects of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics, especially adverse drug reactions and interactions and monitoring therapeutic interventions; medical linguistics, including definition and nomenclature; medical philosophy.
