Dr. César M. A. Vasques graduated in 2000 and got MSc and PhD pre- Bologna degrees in 2003 and 2008, all in mechanical engineering from University of Porto, Portugal. During post-graduation studies, he worked on vibration control of adaptive multi-functional structures. He was granted PhD and post-doc scholarships and a Marie Curie fellowship in 2004 for a 1 year stay during his PhD at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), University of Southampton, UK. Since 2008, he has worked in R&D, technology transfer and consulting in dynamics, vibrations, structural acoustics, structural health monitoring and composites. From 2009-14 he accepted a 5-year position as Senior Researcher at INEGI-University of Porto, Portugal. Since 2014 he started two new positions as invited Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the School of Engineering of Polytechnic of Porto (ISEP/P.PORTO), and Senior R&D Engineer at EFACEC Energy SA, working on noise and vibration control problems in power transformers.
Dr. Vasques has a net number of 73 publication outputs: 1 book by Springer in 2011, 5 book chapters, 14 articles in international journals (454+ citations | h-index: 11 (all); 9 (since 2012) | Google Scholar as of February 2017) and 3 in national journals, 31 articles in international and 12 in national conferences, 1 book review and 2 posters. He supervised 2 MSc, 2 PhD, 1 visiting PhD and 2 visiting scholars. He has coordinated/supervised 10 MSc research assistants and 1 technician during his research career so far. He was recipient of 4 prizes/distinctions (best national PhD thesis in Applied and Computational Mechanics; 1 best student article; 2 article highlights by IOP and Elsevier). He co-organized 1 ECCOMAS conference, organized 3 conference symposiums, chaired 8 conference sessions, has been scientific board member of 6 conferences and edited 4 sections of conference books. He has been Associate Editor of 3 and Editorial Board member of 8 international journals, has reviewed 78 manuscripts for 22 international journals, given 3 invited talks, and participated in 8 post-graduate/graduate juries. He is affiliated to 14 international professional organizations in engineering, acoustics, vibration and aerospace (e.g., AIAA, ASA, NAFEMS, IIAV, EURASEM, GEM1-EDA).
As a leading and independent scientist, he coordinated 11 R&D projects (e.g., 3 for ESA, 1 for EDA, and several others nationally funded) with a total budget under his responsibility of over 1 MEuro, and participated in 9 other R&D projects with a total budget of over 9 MEuro. He contacted professionally with more than 20 companies (e.g., CASSIDIAN, EADS, HPS, EMBRAER, EFACEC, ISQ, AIRWORKS). He has authored and co-authored more than 50 technical reports. Worth to mention is the experience attained by Dr Vasques as project/technical manager of the qualification testing activities of project NeXA for HDRM (Non-Explosive Actuator for Hold-Down and Release Mechanisms) for ESA, the experience as project leader and project/technical manager of the project IMFC (Innovative Materials: Impact Detection by Functional Coatings) for European Defence Agency and the experience as work-package leader and technical manager of the material characterization and environmental (vibration, shock and thermal vacuum) testing activities for project RTM-EBOX (Thermally Conductive RTM CFRP) for ESA. Since 2014 Dr Vasques has been cooperating with nationally R&D funding agencies as an Invited Expert for the evaluation of more than 20 R&D projects.
Dr. Vasques has sound R&D experience in experimental mechanics (e.g., composite materials characterization, space qualification testing, vibration testing, experimental modal analysis, real-time vibration control, Matlab/Simulink, Labview) and computational mechanics (e.g., finite element modelling, rigid/flexible multibody dynamics). His field of expertise, current interests and activities cover mechanical, aerospace and energy engineering applications, somewhat related with multibody dynamics, vibration and damping, smart materials and structures, computational mechanics (deformation theories, finite element modeling, damping models and active structures), experimental mechanics (vibration testing, modal analysis, shock testing, materials characterization and NDT), mechatronics and structural control, structural acoustics, structural health monitoring (ultrasonic methods, vibration-based, electrical impedance, self-sensing), impact mechanics and wave propagation, composite structures (constitutive behavior, damage, crashworthiness, multi-scale mechanics), and transformers noise and vibration.
In parallel with the scientific activity, Dr. Vasques has also a significant pedagogical experience, attested by the several part- and full-time lecturing activities undertaken in various courses of Mechanical Engineering in Portuguese high education institutions since 2003.
