Dr Huachen Zhu received her PhD in Genetics from the Sun Yat-Sen University, China. She joined the State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases at HKU in 2007, and was promoted to Research Assistant Professor in 2011 and Assistant Professor in 2013. She is an Adjunct Professor at the Shantou University and Associate Director of the State Key Laboratory of Emerging Infectious Diseases (HKU-Shenzhen Branch).
Her research field is focused on influenza and other emerging infectious diseases. She is currently in charge of coordinating the surveillance and research projects at the HKU collaborative laboratories at Ho Chi Minh City, Guangxi, Xiamen, Shantou and Shenzhen. Her long-term goals are to identify novel viruses that are potentially infectious for humans, and to understand the viral molecular mechanisms and host factors that lead to a higher risk of interspecies transmission, increased pathogenicity and pandemic potential in these viruses.
