Biography

Prof. Miguel Cervera is Ingeniero de Caminos, Canales y Puertos (UPC, 1983), Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering (University of Wales, 1986), Dr. Ingeniero de Caminos, Canales y Puertos (UPC, 1988). He was Associate Professor of Continuum Mechanics and Structural Analysis (1988-1999) and is Professor of Continuum Mechanics and Structural Analysis (since 1999) at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos of Barcelona (UPC). He has been Deputy Director for Infrastructures and Resources (1990-1991), Head of Studies for Civil Engineering (1991-1994), Deputy Director for Academic Coordination (1994-1996) and Academic Registrar (1996-1997) at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos of Barcelona. In 1988 he was one of the founder members of the Spanish Society for Numerical Methods in Engineering (SEMNI) and he has been a member of the Executive Committee of SEMNI since 1996. In 1998 Prof. Miguel Cervera was co-winner of the Honorable Mention for the Award "City of Barcelona on Technological Research". In 2012 he won the UPC Board of Trustees Award for Quality Career in University Teaching. Also in 2012, he was awarded the "Jaume Vicens Vives" Medal for Excellence in University Teaching by the Government of Catalonia. In 2016 he received the "IACM Fellows Award", bestowed by the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM) to recognize individuals with a distinguished record of research, accomplishment and publication in areas of Computational Mechanics. Prof. Miguel Cervera has published 13 books in Mechanics and Strength of Materials and in Structural Mechanics, used as reference textbooks in graduate and post-graduate courses in Engineering and Architecture in universities in Spain, Argentina, Peru, Guatemala and Portugal. Prof. Miguel Cervera has published 96 research papers in JCR scientific journals, over 180 communications in International Conferences, Congresses and Symposiums and 23 monographs and 9 book chapters in the field of non-linear computational mechanics of solids, with focus on finite element technology, non-linear constitutive modeling, and thermo-mechanical and coupled problems and numerical simulation of construction and production processes. Prof. Miguel Cervera has participated in 62 national and international research conferences, acting in many of them as member of the Scientific or the Organizing Committee. He has also co-organized a number of special invited sessions and has been invited as keynote lecturer in several international conferences. He also acts regularly as referee for 33 international scientific journals and has been co-editor of a special issue of the International Journal of Plasticity on Numerical Simulation of Forming Processes (2001) and editor of a special issue of Materials on Computational Modeling of Cohesive-Frictional Materials (2017). He is member of the Editorial Board of the "Revista Internacional de Métodos Numéricos para Cálculo y Diseño en Ingeniería" and "Advances in Industrial Engineering and Management". Prof. Miguel Cervera has participated in numerous financed research projects, most of them related to the application of Finite Elements Methods to the development of tools for Computer Aided Engineering, with focus on the industrial applications of thermo-mechanical processes with phase change and chemical interactions. These include different techniques for Casting, Welding, Metal Deposition and Additive Manufacturing.
