Biography

Cathi Albertyn is a Professor of Law and South African Research Chair in Equality, Law and Social Justice in the School of Law at the University of the Witwatersrand. Prior to joining the School, Cathi was the Director of the Centre for Applied Legal Studies (2001-2007) and headed its Gender Research Programme for ten years (1992 - 2001). During that time she worked closely with the women's movement in seeking to influence the constitutional negotiations and, after 1994, on several policy and law reform processes. Cathi teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses on constitutional law and human rights, and is engaged in research on equality, gender, human rights and constitutional law. She is a B1 rated researcher, defined as enjoying considerable international recognition for the impact and quality of her research, and as being viewed as a leading international scholar in her field.
She is an editor of the top rated legal journal in South Africa, the South African Journal on Human Rights, and is on the editorial board of the University of Oxford Human Rights Hub Journal and the South African Judicial Education Journal. In 1997, she was appointed a Commissioner on the first Commission on Gender Equality. In 2005, she was short-listed by the Judicial Services Commission for appointment to the Constitutional Court, and between 2007-2011, she served as Commissioner at the South African Law Reform Commission. She has previously served on the executive of non-government organisations, including the Reproductive Rights Alliance (RRA) and the Coalition for the Advancement of the South Africa Constitution (CASAC).
