Arturo González graduated as "Ingeniero Tecnico Superior de Caminos, Canales y Puertos" (6-yr Civil Engineering degree) at University of Cantabria (Spain, 1995). Then, he obtained MSc and PhD's degrees from the School of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at Trinity College Dublin (Ireland, 1996 and 2000), specialising in bridge weigh-in-motion and vehicle-bridge interaction models. In 2001 he continued research as Newman post-doctoral fellow in University College Dublin (UCD, Ireland). In 2003, he started his career as college lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering at UCD, where he is currently Associate Professor. He imparts syllabus for modules on analysis of structures, elasticity, civil engineering design and bridge engineering. In 2015, he completed a NQF level 9 Postgraduate Diploma in University Teaching and Learning (UCD School of Teaching & Learning). In 2017, he received a Teaching Excellence Award from the College of Engineering and Architecture, and a Certificate recognising leadership at Ireland's Champions of EU Research 2017 from the National Support Network for Horizon 2020.
His main interest of research is bridge loading, with emphasis on traffic loading and its dynamic effects. He is author of more than 170 publications (65 international peer-reviewed journal papers, 101 conference papers -including 7 best paper prizes-, 3 reports, 1 book, 2 book chapters and 2 edited conference proceedings) with an H-index = 23, in the areas of structural dynamics, health monitoring, traffic loading, bridge assessment and cooperative learning. He has supervised 11 PhD and 7 MEngSc by research theses to completion. He has chaired sessions in Bridge Symposiums (BEI 2004, BRI 2006, BCRI 2012, CERI 2018), and Modelling (MSO 2004), Weigh-In-Motion (ICWIM 2005), Damage Assessment of Structures (DAMAS 2013), Safety and Reliability (ESREL 2017) and Life-Cycle Assessment (IALCCE 2018) International Conferences. He is or has been part of International Editorial Boards or Scientific Committees of Jornadas Ache de Enseñanza de la Ingeniería Estructural in Spain, Bridge and Infrastructure Research in Ireland (CERAI), and CIVIL-COMP, DAMAS and ESREL conference series. He is an academic editor for Advances in Civil Engineering journal.
He participated in EU COST345 (Procedures required for assessing highway structures, 1998-2002) and FP4 WAVE (Weighing of Axles and Vehicles for Europe, 1996-1999) projects where he co-authored both final reports. He is main author of the deliverable on Dynamic allowance in Bridges in FP6 ARCHES (Assessment and Rehabilitation of Central European Highway Structures, 2006-2009), where he played the role of UCD Principal Investigator. He participated as researcher in FP7 ASSET-ROAD (Advanced safety and driver support in essential road transport, 2007-2011), and as UCD PI under the FEHRL umbrella in FP7 TRANSFORMERS (2013-2017), where he co-authored the deliverable about Effects on Bridges of the various Vehicle Configurations. Nowadays, he is Project Coordinator for TRUSS (Training in Reducing Uncertainty in Structural Safety, 2015-2019), a 3.7 million euro H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie ITN, and Irish Coordinator for MARS-Fly (Mobile Automated Rovers Fly-By for Bridge Network Resiliency, 2017-2020), a 1.7 million euro SFI-NSF US-Ireland R&D partnership.
