Thomas R Insel



Thomas R. Insel, MD has been the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health since 2002 and served as the Acting Director of the National Center for Advancing Translational Research from December 2011 – September, 2012. His career has spanned several disciplines including clinical research, developmental psychobiology, chemical neuroanatomy, social neuroscience, and comparative primatology. Prior to joining NIMH in 2002, he was the founding Director of the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience and Director of the Yerkes Regional Primate Center, both in Atlanta, GA. His tenure at the NIMH has been marked by an increased focus on genomics and neuroscience, applying both disciplines to address mental disorders as neurodevelopmental syndromes.
