Professor Julian Eastoe is a British chemist: he has held Academic positions continuously for 25 years, firstly at the University of Durham (1992-1993), and since 1993 in the School of Chemistry at the University of Bristol. He was appointed to a Personal Chair at the University of Bristol in 2004. He has a PhD in Chemistry from the University of East Anglia (1990). His research interests span colloid, surfactant and polymer chemistry and applications of neutron scattering. Editorships and Editorial boards Since 2006 he has been a Co-Editor for the Journal of Colloid and Interface Science (Impact Factor 5), which is one of the leading journals in the field. He has handled > 6000 papers to date. From 2003-2005 he served as UK Editor for the journal Colloid and Polymer Science. From 1997-2014 Eastoe served as an Editorial Board member of the American Chemical Society journal Langmuir. From 2017 he is an Editorial Advisory Board member for the journal Chinese Chemical Letters. Research Publications He has published over 300 articles, and Scopus (www.scopus.com) shows >10,000 citations, averaging and an H-index of 53. He has been identified as one of the five most prolific authors in the ACS journal Langmuir 2011-2016 (http://journalstars.acs.org/materials-science-engineering/journal/langmuir). He has been publishing in Langmuir since 1992, and now has over 100 papers in the journal. Awards and Indicators of Esteem He was awarded the 2015 ECIS-Solvay Prize from the European Society for Colloid and Interface Science “for original scientific work of outstanding quality … in the previous five years”. He is winner of the 2007 Rideal Award from the UK Royal Society of Chemistry and Society for Chemical Industry for "distinction in colloid or interface science". Eastoe is the permanent Chair of the major International Colloids Conference series held in Amsterdam May 2011, July 2015, Berlin 2016, Barcelona (Sitges) 2017, Shanghai 2018 and Barcelona (Sitges) 2019 (http://www.colloidsconference.com/). He has given over 140 research talks, with recent Plenaries at international conferences in France, UK, Australia and China. He has given 63 viva voce PhD examinations. He has served as an Expert Witness in a UK patent infringement trial at the High Court in London (2008-2009), and he has been a Nominated Expert for the European Medicines Agency (2009). Research Group Up to 2018 he has funded and supervised 43 PhD students in his group (18 female, and 14 from overseas). He has had 13 Post-doctoral researchers and received 29 international research visitors. Industry Since 1993 Professor Eastoe has received an unbroken string of grants from Industry with Kodak, Syngenta, Huntsman, Infineum, Merck, DSM, Croda, Fiberlean (Imerys), Omnova, Greater Glasgow Health Authority, Angus Fire, Ciba, Astra, Cabot, Glaxo, Disperse Technologies, Eli Lilly and Kruss. His PhD students and Post-docs have been employed by the following companies: GSK, P&G, Unilever, Imerys, Astra Zeneca, Lubrizol, Mars, Pharametricals, Thorn EMI, Nanomagnetics, Sun Chemical, Seagate and Crossfield. He has acted a as consultant to BP, Unilever, Odeco Nalco, Presans, Huntsman Surface Science, Eli Lilly, Infineum, Astra Zeneca, Aveica, GSK, AEE Technologies and Enterprise Ireland. As Director of the 4-Year MSci (Masters) undergraduate course “Chemistry with Industrial Experience he interacts closely with about 30 companies per year over the placement of undergraduate students. He is winner of the 2015 Industry-sponsored prize ECIS-Solvay Award. Teaching He delivers a range of different Undergraduate lecture courses in general Physical Chemistry, specialist units in Colloid, Materials and Interface Science, laboratory practicals and final year research projects in Colloid Science. He is Director of the 4-Year MSci (Masters) undergraduate course “Chemistry with Industrial Experience” (course code F105), and Undergraduate Industrial Placements Officer. Interactions with Chinese Scientists For 25 years he has been engaging and working closely with Chinese Scientists. Seven Visiting Scientists (PhDs, Post-docs and Academics) have come to his lab for 1-year visits from China, funded by a variety of travel grants, including a Royal Society China fellowship to fund Dr. Aihua Zou. He has made seven business trips to China, travelling extensively in the country: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2015. Professor Eastoe has published a unique bi—lingual Chinese/English Colloid Science textbook, based on these lecture courses: “Surfactant Chemistry” Wuhan University Press, Wuhan China. ISBN 7-307-04552-4. 183 pages in Chinese and English, 2005. Research publications with Chinese Scientists Since 1996 he has published 24 papers with Chinese co-authors, representing about 10% of his total publication output: these 24 papers have received 690 citations, averaging 29 citations per paper, with an effective H-index of 12.
