Biography

Jolanta JAWOREK MD PhD is an absolvent of Medical Faculty of Medical University, Cracow, professor of Medicine at Jagiellonian University Medical College, Cracow, Poland, specialist of internal medicine and rheumatology, former dean of Faculty of Health Sciences. She is a head of the Department of Medical Physiology at Jagiellonian University and one of leading research experts in physiology and pathophysiology of the pancreas. Her research includes the neural and hormonal regulation of pancreatic secretion, the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis, and mechanisms involved in pancreatic defense and protection of pancreas. She reported the effects of pioneer studies on the role of melatonin and L-tryptophan in the modulation of pancreatic secretion and pancreatic inflammation. Her research includes also studies on appetite control, the effects of endotoxin, leptin, growth factors, nitric oxide on pancreatic function. She published about 150 original papers in most prestigious scientific journals and 15 book chapters on the area related to physiology, gastrointestinal physiology, neurophysiology, and rheumatology. Prof Jaworek was working as Visiting Scientist and Postdoctoral fellow at Tulane University LA, Columbia University MI, USA and INSERM, Toulouse, France. She serves as the reviewer for papers submitted for international journals and on various grant committees as reviewer for projects in the field of gastroenterology and pathophysiology.
