Biography
Jorge F.B. Pereira is an Associate Professor with Habilitation in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra (FCTUC), Portugal. He is also a member of CERES (Chemical Engineering and Renewable Resources for Sustainability), where he coordinates Group 3 - Bioresources and Applied Biosciences. Since 2021, Jorge has served as the Vice-Director of the Department of Chemical Engineering at FCTUC. He is an accredited professor in the Graduate Program of “Bioscience and Biotechnology Applied to Pharmacy” at São Paulo State University (UNESP), Brazil.
Jorge received his M.Sc. in Biological Engineering from the University of Minho, Portugal, in 2008, which included a six-month internship at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of São Paulo, Brazil. He completed his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Aveiro in 2013, under the mentorship of Prof. João A. P. Coutinho. His thesis earned the Mário Quartin Graça Scientific Award for excellence in technologies and natural sciences. He subsequently held a postdoctoral position at The University of Alabama, USA (2013–2014), working with Prof. Robin D. Rogers on a collaborative project with the MIT/Novartis Research Center.
From 2014 to 2019, Jorge Pereira served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioprocesses and Biotechnology at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, UNESP, and established the BioPPuL - Bioproducts’ Production and Purification Lab, dedicated to developing sustainable technologies for high-value bioproduct production and purification.
Jorge Pereira’s research focuses on:
Studying and developing Aqueous Biphasic Systems (ABS)-based strategies
Developing technologies for bioproducts' production, concentration, and purification, with a specialization in solid-liquid and liquid-liquid extraction.
Integrating and scaling up bioprocess separation techniques.
Advancing biotechnological processes, emphasizing fermentation, production, isolation, and purification of high-value biomolecules.
Exploring chemical and microbiological methods for enhanced oil recovery.
Examining molecular interactions in separation processes.
