Biography

Chris read Psychology at the University of Durham and obtained BA, MA and PhD. He is currently Professor of Primary Care and Community Health in The School of Health Sciences, The University of Manchester.

Chris is Director of the UK National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Policy Research Unit Older People and Frailty, and Lead for Healthy Ageing, NIHR Applied Research Collaboration-Greater Manchester. Chris is NIHR Senior Investigator and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of The British Psychological Society. During 2020-2022 COVID-19 pandemic period he sat on the UK Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) Social Care Working Group.

Chris’s work is broadly Health Services Research related to policy related to Healthy Ageing, including fall prevention, frailty prevention, and activity promotion amongst older people, as well as the use of technologies in support of interventions with older people. He also has a long term interest in palliative care research.

He has held and/or currently holds grants from the Department of Health, NHS, various research charities, MRC, NIHR and the European Commission, He has reviewed for a wide range of research committees and charities both in UK and overseas. Chris led the EC funded projects ProFaNE Prevention of Falls Network Europe; and ProFouND Prevention of Falls Network for Dissemination. He has in excess of 300 research publications.

Chris sculls (no longer so competitively) with Agecroft Rowing Club and despite living in Manchester has no interest in soccer.
