Biography
I am presently a Senior Researcher at the Innovation Value Institute (IVI), Maynooth University, leader of the IVI Digital Health research cluster, and assistant lecturer in the School of Business. I am also affiliated with Lero, the Research Ireland Centre for Software and receive funding for my research. I am currently working on responsible use of AI in health and well-being by facilitating person/patient empowerment and seamless communication within the healthcare system (http://cohealth.ivi.ie/). My research interests include Responsible AI, Digital Health Transformation, Patient Empowerment, Human-machine communication, Data analytics, Semantic Web, Smart cities, Cybersecurity, and Open Data/Big Data
I hold a PhD in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Telecommunications from the University of Palermo and have a professional experience of over thirty years in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in different working environments such as academia, industry, and government and with different roles such as researcher, lecturer, manager, project coordinator, consultant, and system analyst. I have worked in several countries such as Italy, Ireland, United States and Canada. I have authored more than fifty peer-reviewed articles for journals, books and conferences and I have presented my work at international conferences winning six best paper awards. I have received grants from international bodies such as the European Union (under FP7, H2020, and Horizon Europe framework programs) and national bodies including Research Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and the National Research Council of Italy.
