Biography
Born 05.12.1949; studied biology at Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen in summer semester, 1970, from winter semester 1970/71 biology and sociology at Freie Universität Berlin, Diploma in biology in 1976 (behavioural studies in squirrel monkeys, especially paternalistic behaviour), doctoral degree (Dr.rer.nat.) in biology in 1982 (Evolution of Criocerinae [Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae]), from 1983 until 1989 university assistant at the institute of zoology at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau; 1990-1992 editor of Herder-Lexikon Biologie vol. 10 "Biologie im Überblick", Herder-Verlag Freiburg i.Br.; April - September 1992 scientific referee for Badischer Landesverein für Naturkunde und Naturschutz in Freiburg (Badenian Regional Society for Natural History and Nature Conservation), from October 1992 to September, 2009, curator of beetles at Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig in Bonn, head of the entomological department and second vice-director of the museum.
Habilitation in zoology (at Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg) 1993, private docent at Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn since 1994, appointed non-regular (“ausserplanmaessiger” ≈ „adjunct“) professor of zoology in 2001. Since October, 2009, scientific employee and non-regular professor of zoology at Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Universität Greifswald, retired since 2015.
Since 1995 Managing Editor, from 2004 to 2007 Editor-in-Chief of Zoologischer Anzeiger, Editor-in-Chief of Bonner zoologische Beiträge from 2002 to 2009, co-editor of Research on Chrysomelidae from 2007. From 1997 to 2000 chairman of the section for Systematics of Deutsche Zoologische Gesellschaft (German zoological society), member of the board of the International Society of Zoological Sciences from 2004 to 2008, president of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geschichte und Theorie der Biologie (German Society for History and Philosophy of Biology) from 2015 until 2019.
