Biography
As Senior and Expert Research Scientist (Research Director) at Institut Pasteur since 2013, I bring extensive expertise in molecular and cellular biology, immunology, and infectious diseases, with a specialized focus on malaria and host immune responses. My carrier began with a University Degree of Technology in Biological Analyses (DUT, ENSUT, Dakar-Senegal) in 1994, followed by a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Immunology from Joseph FOURIER University, Grenoble, France, in 2001. This robust academic foundation propelled me into a pioneering research career at Institut Pasteur, where I broke new ground in host-parasite interactions during malaria.
Over the last two decades, as PI and co-PI of multiple high-impact multidisciplinary research projects, I have played a world-leading role in malaria research. My contributions span (1) advanced phenotypic, functional, structural, and immunological characterizations of receptor-ligand interactions driving P. falciparum cytoadherence, (2) innovative field-based malaria studies, and (3) the development of cutting-edge serological tools for monitoring malaria control strategies and elucidating host-parasite dynamics during Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax infections. These efforts have significantly influenced malaria control and elimination strategies.
Following temporary career interruptions due to family obligations (2005-2006 & 2010-2011), I returned to lead groundbreaking research at Institut Pasteur in Paris, successfully reintegrating as a key member of the research staff. My commitment to leveraging scientific expertise for public health impact led me to join the Institut Pasteur International Network in 2013, where I assumed leadership of the Immunology of Infectious Diseases Unit at Institut Pasteur de Madagascar.
In Madagascar (2013-2019), I established an advanced immunological research platform, driving transformative research programs to address pressing public health challenges, including stunting, malaria, taeniasis/cysticercosis, leptospirosis, and plague. I led the development of innovative serological and molecular diagnostic tools, significantly enhancing disease surveillance and public health interventions. My strategic vision extended to capacity building, where I championed mentorship and training programs for emerging scientists, particularly in immunology and malaria, fostering sustainable scientific growth in low-resource settings. I also spearheaded the acquisition of a state-of-the-art microbiology mobile laboratory, revolutionizing epidemic-prone disease surveillance and public health responses in remote areas.
My exceptional leadership and commitment to advancing global health were recognized in 2019 when I was named among the 200 Francophone Women Leaders in Global Health worldwide. This honor reflects my unwavering dedication to research, public health, and capacity building to improve health outcomes in underserved communities.
Since September 1, 2019, I have served as Head of the Immunophysiopathology and Infectious Diseases Department at Institut Pasteur de Dakar, Senegal. In this role, I lead a high-performing, multidisciplinary team driving cutting-edge research on malaria and COVID-19. I am currently leading the CEPI Reference Laboratory at IPD, supporting vaccine validation during clinical trials, thereby accelerating the development of safe and effective vaccines for global health security. I strategically oversee immunological and single-cell analysis platforms, pioneering studies that integrate local pathogen genomic surveillance with immunological data to accelerate diagnostics and vaccine discovery. My work continues to influence global health policies and advance public health strategies across Africa.
