Biography

Jean Wagemans is a philosopher with special expertise in rhetoric, argumentation and debate. Wagemans completed a M.A. in Philosophy and a Ph.D. in Argumentation Theory at the University of Amsterdam. He is a senior researcher affiliated to the Argumentation and Rhetoric Group (ARGA) of the Amsterdam Centre for Language and Communication (ACLC). Wagemans' main research interests are classical rhetoric and dialectic, pragma-dialectics, and philosophical and scientific argumentation. He is a co-author of Argumentation and debate (in Dutch) and the Handbook of Argumentation Theory, and has published journal articles, book reviews, and popularizing columns (see Academia website). Wagemans is the initiator of the Periodic Table of Arguments, a systematic and comprehensive overview of dialectical and rhetorical descriptions of the types of argument (see Periodic Table of Arguments website). Wagemans is an editor of the journal Argumentation and has written reviews for the Journal of Argumentation in Context, Informal Logic, and other journals in the field. He acted as a co-director of the 9th ISSA Conference on Argumentation and as a member of the scientific panels of ECA, ARGAGE, DIS and other conferences in the field.
