Biography

Assistant Professor and Researcher at the Human Sexuality Group at the Center for Psychology at University of Porto (CPUP), Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences at University of Porto. I graduated as clinical psychologist from ISPA in 2003 and completed a MSc degree in Psychology of Child Development at the University of Central Lancashire in 2016. In 2014 I completed a PhD in Psychology at UBI with a FCT grant. My research was focused on family functioning in lesbian/gay/bisexual families and social attitudes toward these families. During the PhD I completed two visiting fellowships at Birkbeck, University of London. In 2015 I started a post-doc funded by FCT to examine adopted children's adjustment in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and heterosexual families, and was the Principal Investigator (PI; co-PI F Tasker) of a study about adoptive parents and their children in the UK (funded by British Academy). In the last 5 years I expanded my international research network with collaborations and publications with G Shenkman (Tel Aviv University, Israel), F Salinas-Quiroz (National Pedagogic University, Mexico), and C Hermosa (Universidad de Las Américas, Ecuador) about lesbian/gay/bisexual families and attitudes toward them. I also integrated a research network to study European attitudes toward lesbian/gay/bisexual families, led by S DAmore (University of Liège, Belgium) and R-J Green (Alliant International University, USA), and in 2021 I was appointed to the managing committee of the COST Action CA19103, LGBTI+ Social and Economic (in)equalities. Before my current academic position, I was a researcher and assistant professor at ISPA where I taught master and doctoral-level students on family psychology, LGBT and sex research, and research methods. I have supervised more than 40 MSc research intern and MSc students, supervise(d) 8 PhD students (2 FCT funded) and have participated in 80 MSc and PhD juris. I have published more than 6o scientific articles, 31 paper abstracts, 3 conference proceeding papers, 11 book chapters and 2 books. My publications were well received by the scientific community, with over 850 citations in Scopus (h-index = 18), and over 1400 citations in GoogleScholar (h-index = 23). My academic profile has also drawn media attention, with participations as a specialist in the most important national radio (e.g, Antena1), TV (e.g., SIC), newspapers (e.g., Público), and magazines (e.g., Visão). I have done more than 80 presentations in (inter)national conferences, given 4 national and international keynote addresses, organized 3 international conferences, 6 national academic events, and have been part of the scientific committee of several conferences. Particularly, I organized the 1st International Conference on LGBT Psychology and the 3rd nternational Conference on LGBT Psychology . I have been a reviewer for several top-tier journals (e.g., Child Dev, Sex Res Social Policy), and have acted as editorial board member for J Homosex and J LGBTQ+ Family, associate editor for Front Psychol, and associate editor and editor-in-chief for Psych Com Health. I have also been involved in different scientific coordination and scholarly activities.
