Biography
Rosa Resende is a Biologist (1998), Master in Cell Biology (2002) and received, in 2008, her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (UC). In 2005 she did a scientific training (6 months) at the University of California (UCLA), USA. After her PhD she had 3 children that impacted her scientific productivity. Her research has been focused on the study of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer disease and psychiatry disorders such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, focusing on disturbances of ER-mitochondria contacts and on pathological deregulation of cellular and organelle stress responses and aiming the discovery of new targets for therapeutic intervention. For these purposes, she has been using in vitro (cell lines and primary cell cultures) and in vivo experimental models (transgenic mice), and human biological samples (blood and skin-derived fibroblasts) due to a fruitful collaboration with the Psychiatry Department of the Coimbra University Hospital. Due to her participation in 25 funded projects, R Resende published 31 peer-reviewed papers, the majority in international quartile 1 (Q1) journals and 2 book chapters. In addition, she is inventor of 1 patent, demonstrating the relevance of her research in knowledge transfer promotion. The scientific impact of her research is reflected in the H index (18) and high number of citations (more than 1600; Web of Science). Two of her papers are top 10 and one top 5 (NIH percentile). She is a reviewer editor in several scientific journals, and guest editor of one concluded special issue. The articles published under the special issue were compiled in a recently published e-book. In 2017, the project she was developing was awarded with the Bolsa Edgar Cruz e Silva prize 2017 funded by GEECD and SCML. She supervised 5 MSc students (2 ongoing) and was main arguer of 7 MSc theses. She also participated in the laboratory training of Master and PhD students and research fellows and supervised 17 graduate students under the laboratory rotations in collaboration with MSc courses and PhD Programmes. She has reviewed papers for several scientific journals and evaluated research proposals from international institutions. To increase her scientific and technical knowledge, she attended many post-graduate courses/workshops at different national and international universities and research institutes of which she highlights the Course in Laboratory Animal Science (Accredited by FELASA, category C). To disseminate her research work she has made several oral communications, some of them by invitation, and participated in diverse (inter)national scientific meetings and has been actively enrolled in scientific outreach activities (member of the organization committee or collaborator), namely Brain Awareness Week, internships during Summer Holidays promoted by Ciência Viva and Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), and Portuguese Science and Technology Week. She has participated in audiovisual material production to boost public awareness to psychiatry and neurodegenerative diseases such as BD, SCZ, and AD namely, a comic strip, a newspaper column, and interviews. Besides her research activities, she has been Lecturer in the Doctoral Program in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine, Doctoral program in Health Sciences, Master in Biomedical Research, Master in Molecular and Translational Neuroscience, and Integrated Masters in Biomedical Engineering and Medicine from the UC.
