Carlos M. Fernandes was born in Luanda in 1973 . He graduated (Instituto Superior Técnico, 1998) in Electrotechnics Engineering and owns a master degree in the same field since 2002 (Instituto Superior Técnico). He has a Ph.d. on Bio-inspired Computing since 2009.
From 2001 to 2005 he teached at Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal. He is a permanent member of the Evolutionary Systemas and Biomedical Engineering Lab (Lasseb), Techinical University of Lisbon, since 1998. He is also a member of the Geneura Team, University of Granada, since 2008. Currently, he is a pos-doctoral researcher at the University of Lisbon. He is also a photographer and a photography teacher.
Bio-inspired Computing is his major field of research: Genetic Algorithms, Estimation of Distribution Algorithms, Ant Colony Optimization, Particle Swarm Optimization and other metaheuristics. He is particularly interested in the hybridization of Bio-inspired Computing techniques with Self-Organization, Self-Organized Criticality Models and diversity maintenance strategies.
Artificial Art and the relationships between Art and Science have been one his themes of research recently.
