Personal information

Biography

Olga Zeni was born in Pozzuoli (Naples), Italy, in 1964. She received the degree in Biological Sciences in 1990 at the University 'Federico II' in Naples, and the PhD degree in Zootechnical Science, in 1996, from the University of Bologna, Italy. Since 2001 she has a permanent position as research scientist at the Institute for Electromagnetic Sensing of Environment of the Italian National Research Council (IREA-CNR). Her research activity mainly focuses on the evaluation of the interaction between electromagnetic fields and mammalian cells. In particular, she works at the evaluation of key cellular parameters, strictly related to carcinogenesis process, such as cell viability, proliferation and cell cycle, DNA integrity, apoptosis, oxidative stress, after exposure to electromagnetic fields, from extremely low frequencies to THz. Moreover, she is also involved in the evaluation of intracellular effects of ultra short electric pulses, and in the study of biocompatibility of nanoparticles. Olga Zeni has experience in the revision of the scientific literature related to the biological effects of electromagnetic fields. She has been involved, in the framework of the project EMF-NET (VI FP) as a member of the working group WP2.4 THz-studies (2004-2008). At present she is contributing in drafting the Environmental Health Criteria Monograph of Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, WHO, section - Immune System and Hematology, in drafting the opinion on “Potential health effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) of the Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks” (EC- SCENIHR), and in the preparation of the IEEE International Committee on Electromagnetic Safety literature review She serves as a Reviewer for several international peer-reviewed journals.
