I am a highly motivated researcher with over 20 years of experience conducting research into image processing, psychophysics, signal processing, image quality, and models for the quantification of image preference and aesthetics. I have strong skills in statistical reasoning and modelling, experimental design, psychophysical modelling, colour science, human perception, and signal processing. I have extensive experience with both government and industrial research and this has led me to have a strong results-driven focus to my research. I strive to conduct research that directly impacts society. This might be the creation of technologies that go into commercial products, technologies that aid in industrial manufacturing and design, or technologies that help government agencies protect and serve society. While striving for the above objectives, I have developed a solid understanding of the importance of the management of knowledge, whether by protecting commercial products through patents or disseminating knowledge via academic publications. I have an excellent track record with both patenting and academic publishing as detailed below. In addition, I have over 10 years experience understanding the business context of research and how research can guide and support business and government objectives.
The majority of my career has been spent leading multidisciplinary teams in an industrial environment. As such, I have been successful at achieving project milestones, developing positive relationships with key stakeholders and nurturing and building effective teams. I take leadership very seriously and continuously strive to build teams based on mutual respect, communication, support, fun, and a spirit of pride in the team's achievements. I don't believe in ego-driven leadership where criticism delivered from a position of authority is the primary method to maintain high standards. Instead my experience leading has demonstrated repeatedly that positive environments where all team members feel empowered to both give and receive advice, support and constructive criticism in a friendly atmosphere drives high scientific and business standards.
