My undergraduate and PhD degrees were at Otago University. I worked at Otago for two years and for three years at Auckland University as a post doctoral fellow. In 1999 I was appointed as a lecturer at Massey University's Albany campus. I moved to Auckland University in 2003 and Newcastle in 2012
