Nisreen Alwan

Biography

Dr. Alwan received her BSc (2003) and MSc (2005) Degrees in Biology from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. From 2005 till 2007, she worked as an instructor and a research assistant in the Biology Department at AUB. In 2011, she obtained her PhD Degree in Natural Sciences from Goethe University, Germany. After returning to Lebanon, she was appointed as a Lecturer in the Biology Department at AUB. Since 2014, she joined the Modern University for Business and Science (MUBS), Lebanon. She has served as the Dean of the School of Health Sciences at MUBS from 2014 till 2019. In 2019, Dr. Alwan was appointed as the Acting Vice Provost at MUBS. She worked as an ichthyofauna expert at Management of Resources and Environmental Solutions assessing freshwater fishes to assist in developing an ecological compensation plan for the Bisri dam from 2019 till 2020. From August 2020 till August 2024, she has filled the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the College of Health Sciences at Abu Dhabi University, UAE. From October 2021 till March 2022, she was appointed as the Acting Dean at the College of Health Sciences at Abu Dhabi University. She is currently an Associate Professor of Environmental Health and Safety at Abu Dhabi University.

Her research interests include environmental and food microbiology; antimicrobial resistance; systematics, taxonomy, molecular phylogeny and zoogeography of Cyprinidae in the Middle East; and social injustice and gender inequity. She works on the systematics, taxonomy, phylogeny, and zoogeography of the Capoeta damascina species complex (Pisces: Teleostei: Cyprinidae) inferred from comparative morphology and molecular markers. She is currently leading with some colleagues at MUBS, Cardiff Metropolitan University, and Lebanese American University several research projects. She is the author of more than 30 internationally published articles.
